How to perform an art school

Do not go gentle into that good night
(Gedanken, Flugschriftform)

Müssen wir uns dem this is not contemporary-Label unterordnen?

How to perform an art school

Do not go gentle into that good night

(Gedanken, Flugschriftform)

We have finally understood: In an era of creative economising, the concept of the art academy is being put to test. It has always been a place for the transfer of knowledge, which as opposed to academic theory (conclusion) has been defined by the practical implementation (process) of the subject matter (art). Since the beginning it has been a constant subject of debate as to how a work of art can be evaluated, or if it makes any sense at all to award diplomas for creative work. The art academy has always operated at the interface between autonomous expression (freedom to question the context) and the vindication of its success (access through governmental institutions).

And now? Considering the all-encompassing development that every part of society has started to be influenced by an economic way of thinking and proceeding we can see that the art academy is also strongly affected. It is très chic to attend to advancement. It is good to take part, meaning: to stay visible. It is important to perform systematically, meaning: to be usable.

So where can the art academy take residence as a place for the generation and creation of ideas? How is it to realize its main objective that being to procure the initiation of artistic production (student) in a contemporary fashion and to define the relationship between (teaching) staff, student and material?

It is not old school, when we say: we are forced to call ourselves old school.

It is not about being inside or outside, or to open up or: thereby opening societal spaces that are solely concentrating on arriving and settling in the world of the arts` business. It is not about installing an academic arts degree into one’s personal biography as the part that could be evaluated as an economic success.

It is not about ruminating the circumstances having led us to apply with the art academy in the first place.

(Although it is about that.)

It is failure or lack of success, which should be the focus of our attention. Failure in the sense of void, a system error, an unforeseeable occurrence, of the disruptive blow. The solution is to make ourselves an accomplice of the fearful greatness of failure. Avoiding it will not help matters but will bear unfulfilled art with at least one foot on the brakes.

It is even more so a hindrance for contemporary art schools to make themselves subworkers for the art industry, to keep communicating VANITAS-thinking, which is of any importance and gains any relevance exclusively in regard to the role played by the garden of paradise, the market.

It is about bringing failure into the classroom, about teaching and communicating it, in all its gloominess, and about undressing it to reveal the reality of its existence – to show that, in the end, no artistic expression can do without it.

(We are presuming that at the end of the day the unquestionable aim of art is something of significance and meaning.)

(Honest art is full of risk.)

Is this nostalgic? Is this too romantic? Do we have to submit to the label this is not contemporary? Do we have to leave the old books on the shelves? Can we sleep at night?

These nights are filled with both light and darkness. We want to wander through them with our heads upright, angry and peaceful at the same time.
